Marrying my Korean partner in 6 weeks — what actually changes day-to-day after F-6?

Marrying my Korean partner in 6 weeks. Status change application from E-2 to F-6 is the next step.

The hagwon owner already knows I'm leaving teaching after the wedding and is being weirdly cooperative about it (helping me file the resignation properly). What I'm less clear on:

  1. Do I cancel my E-2 before filing for F-6, or does the status change happen while E-2 is still active?
  2. The marriage cert is being apostilled in the UK right now. What other documents will immigration actually look at?
  3. Once F-6 is granted, is there a waiting period before I can work freely, or is it immediate?
  4. Anyone done this in Seoul specifically — which immigration office handles F-6 filings best? I've heard horror stories about Yongsan being slow.

Trying not to time-bomb my visa during the transition. Any war stories appreciated.

Did this exact transition in 2022 mate. Quick answers:

  1. You don't cancel E-2 first. You file the status change application AT your immigration office while E-2 is still active. Your E-2 stays valid through the review period. If F-6 is approved, your status just updates — no gap, no leaving Korea.
  1. Beyond the marriage cert: family relation cert (가족관계증명서) for your spouse, both passports, both ARCs (yours + your spouse's resident registration), photos, joint financial proof (bank statements showing you actually share life — not a sham marriage check), and 2-3 photos of you together over time. The "real marriage" verification is the bit that surprises people. Have 5-10 photos from different dates ready, not just wedding day.
  1. Immediate. The moment F-6 is granted, you're free to work for anyone. No additional waiting.
  1. Yongsan IS slow but they're not picky about F-6. Yangcheon and Gwacheon are notoriously meticulous on marriage docs. If you're flexible, Yongsan tends to be lenient + slow vs Yangcheon strict + slow. Pick whichever's closer.

Practical timing: total process 4-8 weeks from filing. Your E-2 covers you throughout. Don't book any non-refundable wedding trips abroad until F-6 is in hand.

Oliver's experience matches what we see professionally. A few precision points:

  1. The "no gap" depends on filing the change BEFORE your E-2 expires AND before your E-2 employment ends. If the hagwon files E-2 cancellation paperwork prematurely (because they want to end your contract), your status can fall into an awkward grace period. Coordinate with the hagwon to keep E-2 employment status live until F-6 is granted, OR to file the cancellation at the same moment F-6 is approved.
  1. "Sham marriage" review: in addition to photos, expect questions about how you met, your spouse's family details, where you live, household routine. Korea takes this seriously enough that the application can take 2-4 months in some offices. If your spouse is Korean and you're both in Korea, much smoother than international marriage processing.
  1. UK apostille: make sure the marriage cert apostille is the NEW (post-2024) format. Older format docs are still accepted but some offices ask for re-issuance. Costs £30 + 2 weeks if you need to re-do.
  1. Once granted, your F-6 lasts 1-3 years initially, renewable. After 2 years on F-6 + marriage continuing, you can apply for F-5 directly through the marriage track (lower bar than other F-5 routes). Worth knowing early.

If you need the immigration office to call any of your documents in question, the 1345 English line can pre-screen most issues before you waste a trip.
